Notice biographique

(Montréal, 1922 - ) Romancière, dramaturge, essayiste et nouvelliste, Mavis Gallant est élève au Pensionnat Saint-Louis de Gonzague dès son plus jeune âge. Provenant d'une famille anglophone, elle est cependant élevée dans un milieu bilingue jusqu'à l'âge de dix ans. Après le décès prématuré de son père, elle quitte Montréal et vit dans différentes parties du Canada et des États-Unis.... Elle réside quatre ans à New York puis revient à Montréal où elle exerce plusieurs métiers dont celui de journaliste chroniqueur et critique à l'hebdomadaire montréalais The Standard. Elle y est responsable en grande partie de la culture et des questions sociales, de même que de la couverture des oeuvres de langue française. Elle a entre autres fait connaître Gabrielle Roy et Roger Lemelin. Elle part à Paris en 1950, puis voyage et vit brièvement en Autriche, en Espagne pendant deux ans, et en Italie. Elle choisit finalement la France et s'installe de façon permanente à Paris où elle habite depuis plus de quarante ans.

Mavis Gallant a reçu le Prix du Gouverneur général du Canada, catégorie roman et nouvelles, pour Home Truths : selected Canadian Stories en 1981, le Prix Canada-Australie en 1983 et le Prix Molson en 1996. Elle a également remporté un prix décerné par la Columbia School of Journalism et un autre du Canadian Fiction Magazine. Plusieurs universités lui ont remis un doctorat honoris causa. En 2006, elle devient le premier écrivain de langue anglaise à être récompensée par le prix Athanase-David.
